One for Mexico

Here is a post of things that have warmed my heart, made me laugh lately.

The girls and I were riding to town in the truck yesterday listening to one of Nyah's nursery rhyme CDs (yes, we still listen to CDs). Nyah is very fond of nursery rhymes, as I have mentioned before, but when we came to "Bah, Bah, Black Sheep" she had some interesting lyrics that made me chuckle.

"Bah, bah, black sheep,
Have you any wool?
Yes sir, yes sir,
Three bags, four.
One for the Mexico and one for the farm
(something I couldn't understand)
Bah, bah, black sheep,
Have you any more?
Yes sir, yes sir,
Three bags, four."

Relieved she hasn't forgotten about Mexico.

Lately she has skipped waiting for me to say, "I love you" and she just looks at me or hugs me and skips right to, "I love you too, Mommy". She reads my mind in a perfect way because I am always thinking how much I love her right when she says, "I love you too, Mommy".

Nyah had our sweet neighbor KerryAnn stay for dinner last night, Nyah's first dinner guest. There were bouncing off the walls with excitement, strategically planning the seating arrangement, etc. KerryAnn wanted to tell me about this cool movie she just watched, Meet The Fockers, but of course repeatedly referred to the movie as, Meet The Fuckers. It was hilarious. She had no clue what she was saying and thankfully Nyah didn't catch on and repeat her, rare because KerryAnn can do no wrong in Nyah's eyes, her ultimate older friend idol.  It was difficult to hold the laughter in as this precious little girl repeatedly dropped the "F" bomb in our house.

On another note, I caught a tourist blatantly taking pictures of Elsa yesterday on the boardwalk, crouched with huge lensed camera National Geographic style. He was Danish and didn't know much English but the sheer joy on he and his wife's face watching the girls play made me realize they had no clue. They just used the ol' smile huge and nod method.

Things to do: devise plan how to politely tell tourist not to take pics of native children without parent's permission. Hmmm.

Our Time

Nap time is over. For me that is. I think Nyah has finally outgrown the nap- for now. I am sure her love for sleep will someday return.

We have been in a state limbo lately. If she takes a nap then she stays up way past her bedtime lying in bed talking to herself and calling out one too many times, "Good night Mommy" where she then waits patiently for my reply. If I don't reply she will repeat herself until heard. George loves to trick her by attempting to make his voice sound like mine and then reply "Ni'Night Nyah". He gets away with it every once in a while which he gets a pretty big kick out of. Sometimes she pauses in deep thought trying to decipher our voices but usually replies, "No, I want Mommy". She of course pulls the timeless classics of potty, thirsty, I need to tell you something when sleep challenges her.
When Nyah skips nap she occasionally becomes grumpy by sunset but can usually hang in there for the day without an outburst of emotions until she hits the pillow hard and is almost asleep before singing her usual routine of songs is finished.

George also sings these songs when on bed time duty but I often wonder how one can make it through life without learning the lyrics to "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star". He makes up his own words to these classic rhymes, which is much better and even better when we catch Nyah singing the Daddy version of these songs.

Twinkle, twinkle little star
How I wonder where you are
Up above and down below...

I have to admit, during this time of nap limbo I have been trying to push Nyah into taking a nap or at least into quite time (in her bed). I really treasured that time when both girls would sleep and I could do whatever my heart desired, nap, clean, eat, lounge (yeah right), catch up on stuff. I feared not having alone time but then I realized the one who probably needs alone time is Nyah, alone time with her momma. She is getting older and we have many things we need to do, some of which are impossible to do with a curious, active little sister around. So nap time has become our time to do things we need to do...together. I really love this time and now find myself looking forward to it because she is one funny little girl. And one grown up little girl.

How far we've come, from the days when I would work all night and we would nap during the day, together. How I treasure that snuggle time had, me on my side, knees pulled up making my body in the shape of a "u", she in safely in the comfort of the nook I created.

Three and half years of solid nap time, I gotta say, "Welcome the afternoon Nyah, hope you enjoy big girl".
My favorite little napper.

Storytime

Storytime is an important event in our house. As I've mentioned before it is the perfect time for Nyah to stall before bed or throw a fit because storytime was cut short or taken away due to, well stalling. I thought I would take a moment to highlight some of Nyah's current book obsessions, which we read twice a day, and sometimes more, just depending on how lucky I get. If you ever wonder what I think, well I don't think, I just hear the catchy tune of the Dr. Seuss stories in my head all day.

Big A little a
What begins with A?
Aunt Annie's alligator....A...a..A

Big B little b
What begins with B?
Barber
baby
bubbles
and a
bumblebee

and my favorite

Big M little m
Many mumbling mice
are making
midnight music
in the moonlight...
mighty nice

Nyah's is really fixated on Disney's Nursery Rhymes and Fairytales. As I was reading this book to her the other night, from memory of course,  I was surprised to realize that she too has the book memorized. I then tested her with some of her other storytime addictions, Dr. Seuss's ABC, and Ten Apples Up On Top, and she definitely knows them all. Im not sure why I thought she didn't have the stories memorized, I mean we've only read them a million times. I am so proud of her ease in picking up the stories and I am so glad she is actually listening, though it is now impossible to skip pages when feeling extra tired. One of my favorite things about being a parent is the feeling of surprise and pride felt when watching the progress of a child, realizing the hard work has paid off. The feeling is mighty nice.

Here is a little video of her reciting nursery rhymes. She can talk, I promise, but I think her mind moves a little too quick and her mouth can't quite keep up and she just ends up talking too fast. I have no clue where her tendency to talk fast came from.

Lets be honest, the girl can recite a pretty fierce Jack Be Nimble.
